Variety trial of white potato under lowland condition (coco-based) [Philippines]
1986
Villegas, L.G.
This study was conducted to evaluate and identify high yielding variety/varieties of white potato adapted under lowland partially shaded condition (coco-based). Result shows that Desiree (8.74 t/ha), Diamant (7.04 t/ha), and Sangema (6.74 t/ha) were the three highland white potato varieties that demonstrated good performances during the dry season of 1985-1986 under lowland partially shaded condition. Desiree yielded highest with 8.74 tons per hectare higher than the check variety Berolina (7.63 t/ha) due to production of more marketable (78) and non-marketable (80) tubers. Berolina produced bigger sized tubers but less in number (110). It exhibited an increase of 0.60 percent dry matter while Sangema showed a reduction of 7.93% when planted under lowland partially shaded condition. Growing white potato in the lowland partially shaded is profitable. P8,000-P9,000 can be realized as net profit per hectare, thus additional income to coconut farmers.
