Root systems of the Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) and the pedunculate oak (Quercus robur L.) under varied conditions of moisture content and oxygen access in soils of the Niepolomice forest

Measurements of the root systems were made on 11 areas representing various hydrotypes of the coniferous and deciduous forests. It was stated that both pine and oak showed considerable abilities of modyfying their root systems. The root growth of the examined specimens of pine and oak occurred more or less at the level of the mean depth of the groundwater table. In the case of greater changes of water-oxygen availability in the soil, an increased mortality of roots, especially fine roots, was observed. The pine forest complex of the Niepolomice Forest is characterized by its annual and seasonal oscillations of the moisture content and oxygen access in the soil. The melioration of the area should stabilize the ground water table at the depth of 50-60 cm. This depth would ensure a relatively deep rooting and a sufficiently high moisture content in the upper soil horizons. Great changes in the system of water-oxygen relations are one of the important reasons of the poor sanitary state of the pine forest complex of the Niepolomice Forest
