The objectives of the Tanzanian groundnut breeding program are to develop varieties with stable high yields, to improve crop management, and to create coordinated, interdisciplinary teams for food-legume improvement. Varietal trials have identified some promising lines but the results are inconsistent across locations, mainly because of the variation in rainfall between sites. Cultivars with drought resistance or tolerance, an analysis of rainfall records to optimize sowing dates, and increased amount of irrigation are needed.
