A general profile of wheat production in the state of Sao Paulo, Brazil is presented in this paper. The main aspects to be considered by wheat breeders to develop new cultivars with good agronomic characters are discussed, and the methodology followed to reach these breeding aims is described in detail, as well as the characteristics of new cultivars obtained by Campinas Agronomic Institute
