Observations on the mineral content and nutritive value of diets fed to village ruminants in the Indonesian districts of Bogor (west Java) and Pamekasan (Madura, east Java)

2 villages were studied in each of 2 contrasting agroclimatic zones, a low altitude/low rainfall zone and a medium altitude/high rainfall zone. Each village was visited at least 4 times a year, in the early and late wet season, and early and late dry season. A sample of 10-20 farmers' forage loads (and/or grazing) offered to ruminants was examined. Determinations were made of nitrogen content, ash and neutral detergent fibre. The concentration of the following mineral elements were measured and tabulated: Ca, P, S, Mg, Na, K, Cu, Zn, Se, Mo, Co, Mn and Fe. The results showed that there were differences in seasonality and in crop and forage production patterns between the 2 zones. A wide range of material was used as feed such as hand-harvested native grass from non-cultivated land, crop by-products such as rice straw and maize stover, banana and bamboo leaves, leaves of leguminous and non-leguminous trees, the tops of cassava, sweet potato and bean crops. From the data the mineral nutrients most likely to be limiting animal production are Na and Cu. One of the major limitations to animal production associated with these diets appears to be a shortage of digestible energy
