Influence of deblossoming on floral malformation of mango (Mangifera indica L.)

Six-year-old mango trees of the Dusheri variety with a heavy, consistent incidence of floral malformation in previous years were used for the studies. Entire buds (panicles) were removed by hand when in the bud-burst stage. Deblossoming of healthy and malformed buds significantly (P = 0.05) reduced the emergence, length and breadth of panicle, and significantly (P = 0.05) increased the percentage of hermaphrodite flowers compared with healthy and malformed buds without deblossoming. Whether deblossomed or not, healthy buds produced healthy panicles (100 %) and malformed buds produced malformed panicles (100 %). Healthy buds which were deblossomed produced healthy panicles, which set a significantly (P = 0.05) greater number of fruits (8.00 and 9.00 fruits/panicle) than healthy buds without deblossoming (3.50 and 4.00 fruits/panicle) during the 2 year period. Malformed fruit failed to set fruit even when deblossomed, thus deblossoming showed no effect in improving the productivity of malformed mango trees
