Effect of nitrogen fertilization on yield and quality of multicut tropical forages

3 multicut were used, namely Dinanath grass (Pennisetum pedicellatum), teosinte (Euchlaena mexicana) and Sudan grass (Sorghum arundinaceum). There were four levels of nitrogen fertilization: 0, 50, 100 and 140 kg N/ha. The crop was harvested twice at 10 cm stubble height and at each harvest observations on the number of shoots, plant height and leaf area index were recorded. Nitrogen content, dry matter content and digestibility were determined. From the data, it was found that Dinanath grass and teosinte were not statistically different, but both recorded significantly (P = 0.05) greater forage yields of fresh herbage, dry matter, crude protein and digestible dry matter than Sudan grass. Both fresh herbage and dry matter increased significantly (P = 0.05) with increase in N to 100 kg/ha but fell below N at 150 kg/ha. Both crude protein and digestible dry matter increased significantly (P = 0.05) with increasing levels of N from 0-150 kg/ha
