Effect of nitrogen fertilization and cutting management on the yield and quality of herbage of teosinte (Euchlaena mexicana Schrad.)

4 levels of nitrogen were used: 0, 50, 100 and 150 kg N/ha. The 3 cutting managements were a single cut at the tassel stage, a single cut at the silk stage and two cuts, the first at 60 days after sowing and the second at the silk stage. At harvest, observations on plant height, number of shoots, leaf area index and herbage yields were recorded. The dry matter, nitrogen and crude protein contents were also determined. With an increase in N application, herbage yield increased significantly (P = 0.05) with increase in N level to 100 kg N/ha from a single cut. Under the two-cut system, herbage yield significantly (P = 0.05) increased up to an application of 150 kg N/ha. Crude protein and digestible dry matter yields increased significantly (P = 0.05) with increase in N fertilization to a level of 150 kg N/ha. Single cut management was significantly (P = 0.05) superior over two-cut management in yield but the reverse was true in herbage quality expressed as crude protein and digestibility. In single cut, delay in harvest from tassel to silk stage improved the yield but lowered the quality
