Distribution of boll weevil (Anthonomus grandis Boheman) eggs within cotton plants

The natural distribution of boll weevil eggs (A. grandis) within cotton (Gossypium hirsutum race latifolium) plants were studied throughout the season. Cotton was grown at a spacing of 20 cm x 80 cm and at a density of 2 plants/hill. Field samples were taken at intervals of 3-9 days, the fruit structures dissected and searched for boll weevil eggs. A. grandis deposited more eggs in squares than in bolls throughout the period of study. Boll weevil females preferred to lay proportionately most of their eggs in medium (/ 3 mm and 6 mm in diameter) squares from the beginning to the end of the season. Few boll weevils were found in bolls, and these eggs were laid in small bolls. Most of the eggs were deposited on the upper half of the plant
