Interaction between five endomycorrhizal fungi and the root-knot nematode Meloidogyne javanica on chickpea under tropical conditions

In a glasshouse experiment 5 VA mycorrhizal fungi (Gigaspora margarita, M1; Gigaspora sp., M2; Gigaspora gigantea, M3; Glomas manihotis, M4; Entrophospora colombiana, M5) were tested for their ability to mitigate damage caused by Meloidogyne javanica on chickpea. M4 proved to be the most efficient endophyte, followed by M1, in promoting plant growth in the presence of nematodes. There were increases in shoot dry weight of 139 % and 87 % respectively. The root system of chickpea grew significantly better only in the treatments with M1 and M4; with the other endophytes root fresh weight was not altered when compared with non-mycorrhizal plants. The development of nematode stages in the roots and the reproduction of larvae in the soil were notably suppressed in the presence of M1, M2 and M4, the latter having the strongest effect. Reduction of larvae was weak with M5, while M3 left the number of larvae unchanged. Infection rate of ineffective mycorrhizal fungi was strongly decreased in the nematode treatment
