Effect of irrigation on late season plantains

The performance of plantain cv. Agbagba established in September and irrigated only during peak moisture stress in Nigeria (Jan-Feb) was compared with those irrigated throughout the dry season and those receiving no irrigation. Plant establishment was 96.8, 84.6 and 71.4 % respectively in continuously irrigated peak and non-irrigated plots but yields 12.1, 10.3 and 8.8 t/ha respectively were not significantly different. Time to 50 % shooting was shortest in the continuously irrigated plantains. For the first ratoon crop, yields of the continuously and peak irrigated plots were similar but significantly higher than non-irrigated plantains
