Effect of ploidy level on cell wall composition and digestibility of Brachiaria ruziziensis Germain et Evrard

2 Brachiaria ruziziensis accessions (BRA 001821 and BRA 001902) of different genetic backgrounds were used to determine the effect of induced polyploidy on cell wall components and digestibility. The accessions were treated with 0.5 % colchicine for 4 hours to induce polyploidy. There were significant differences between diploid and tetraploid lines for neutral detergent fibre, acid detergent fibre, cellulose, acid detergent lignin and insoluble ash. The tetraploid lines had consistently higher levels of structural carbohydrates than their diploid counterparts. No significant differences between each ploidy level were detected. Leaf and stem had significant digestibility differences and these were more pronounced at the tetraploid than the diploid levels
