The utilization by goats of energy and protein in diets made from local by-products

Twelve 5 to 8 month old goats were fed diets of varying energy (Trials 1 and 2) and protein (Trial 3) levels formulated from local by-products: wheat middlings, rice bran, meat and bone meal, soybean meal, molasses, coconut oil, cassava middlings, urea and bagasse. Dry matter intakes were 2.98, 3.52 and 2.50 kg DM/100kg liveweight. Dietary energy intake increased with energy concentration in the diet, mean DEI were 7.07, 8.22 and 5.37 MJDE. Digestible-N intake decreased significantly with increasing dietary energy levels, but increased with increasing dietary protein levels in isocaloric diets. Means were 10.66, 12.89 and 5.13g digestible-N for trials 1, 2 and 3 respectively. Mean digestibility coefficients were 0.598, 0.566 and 0.602 in trials 1, 2 and 3. Nitrogen retention and efficiency of N digestion increased with dietary energy. N-retention followed N-intake linearly with mean N-retentions of 5.56, 7.57 and 3.32 g N. The nutrient requirements were similar to values recommended by the United States National Research Council
