Genetic variation, correlation and path analysis in Brassica juncea (L.)

Variability, correlation and path coefficients were studied in Brassica juncea (L). Czern and Coss subsp. juncea L. Considerable genotypic and phenotypic variations were found for the characters seed yield per plant, 1000-seed weight, number of secondary branches per plant, plant height and number of siliquae per plant. Heritability values were high for days to maturity (97.70%), 1000-seed weight (89.47%), plant height (87.90%), and medium for seed yield per plant (52.33%). Genetic advance in percent of mean was also high for 1000-seed weight (48.7w), seed yield per plant (38.68) and days to maturity (16.23) and plant height (27.54). Secondary branches per plant and siliquae per plant also showed considerable genetic advance. Seed yield per plant had high genotypic (0.376-0.793) and phenotypic (0.569.0.737) correlation with days to maturity, plant height, primary branches per plant, number of siliquae per plant and 1000-seed weight. Days to maturity had a high positive direct effect on seed yield per plant, Secondary branches, 1000 -seed weight and number of siliquae per plant also showed considerable amount of positive direct effect on seed yield per plant. The study suggested that days to maturity, 1000-seed weight, secondary branches per plant and number of siliquae per plant are most important characters contributing to higher yield per plant and simultaneous selection is possible for these characters.
