Household fuel situation in Kishoreganj district [of Bangladesh] during flood season

Surveys were conducted in and around the Farming Systems Research (FSR) site, Vasharkhilla, Kishoreganj to understand the existing household fuel situation, specially during flood season, its crisis adjustment and the homestead plantation practices. Household fuel materials used by different farmers were wood, branches and twigs, leaves of trees; straw of paddy and wheat, husk/bran of rice, crop residues of rice, wheat and jute stick; branches, leaves, 'mura' of bamboo and used bamboo. Shortage of fuel is found common irrespective of farm size but is found severe in the small farm groups (landless and marginal). July to October was the period of fuel crisis. Medium and large farms used different methods to overcome the fuel problems during flood requirement were met up by homestead sources and rest 15% were met up by corp field.
