The effect of irrigation water regime on salt distribution pattern, fruiting and water use efficiency in drip irrigated soil [Egypt]

Pea (Pisum sativum) seeds were cultivated in drip-irrigated loamy sand soil in Regwa Farm, Wadi El-Natron. Two rates of irrigation water were applied at 50% moisture depletion. The first rate was recharging root media to field capacity and the second one was 67% of the first. The data showed that the 1st treatment increased the number of flowers, pods and yields per plot by 7.7, 18.6 and 12.1%, respectively. The WUE decreased by 33.5% at the higher level of irrigation relative to the lower one, i.e. decreasing irrigation water by one third increased the water-use efficiency by the same rate. The data indicated an increase in salt accumulation, with increasing distance from drip lines, especially on the surface soil layer (0-20 cm) at the lower irrigation treatment. Difference in salt concentration due to irrigation regime diminished with depth.
