Effect of temperature on the fecundity and longevity of the field and laboratory strains of the blow fly, Chrysomyia albiceps (Wiedeman) (Diptera: Calliphoridae) [Egypt]

Pairs of field and laboratory strains of the blow fly, Chrysomyia albiceps (Wiedeman) were isolated and exposed for various periods at different temperature levels. At low temperature the relationship between exposure time and oviposition in both strains was negative but the number of eggs per female in the laboratory strain was higher and also continued over a longer period than the field one. Survival of the field strain was higher than in the laboratory strain. The field strain revealed more forcible response in the longevity than the other one when the flies were exposed for 5-20 days at low temperature (5 C.) and then transferred to a room temperature. The laboratory strain could not tolerate an exposure to a very low temperature (-15 C) for 10 hours. When the adults of the laboratory strain were exposed to -15 C. for 5 hours and then removed to 5 C. for 8 days all the tested insects perished within 4 days. 100% mortality occurred when the laboratory strain was exposed to 45 C. for 1 hour, but a few insects (about 10%) survived for one week when exposed to 40 C.
