The investigation was carried out to estimate the genetic variance components and expected advance from selection in the composite variety of maize "Cairo 1" by using Design 1. The field work dealing with the study was conducted during the two growing seasons 1985 and 1986 at Moshtohor Agricultural Research Station. Data were collected on grain yield per plant (g), plant and ear heights (cm), ear length (cm),umber of rows/ear and number of kernels per row. The additive genetic variance was the major component of genetic variation for all traits. Also, the additive genetic variance was significant for all traits. Moderate to high heritability values were detected for all traits. The heritability values ranged from 67.09 for number of kernels per row to 23.53 for number of rows per ear.
