The objective of the present work was to investigate the characteristics and distribution of Actinomycetes in some Saudi Arabian soils as well as their biological, antimicrobial and biochemical activities. Soil samples were collected from three localities at Al-Taif region, namely: Al-Shafa, Al-Hada, Liyyah. The results obtained could be summarized in the following points:- Differences in actinomycete population were observed in the investigated soil samples being higher at 5-15 cm depth than at soil surface. The highest number of actinomycete colonies was observed in soil samples collected from Liyyah. Organic matter, soluble salt content and chloride level play an important role influencing actinomycetes population in the investigated localities. - The genus Streptomyces revealing the highest frequency, whereas Nocardia and Micromonospora were rarely isolated. - Most Streptonyces isolates belonged to the gray series followed by red, white, green and the least number of isolates was among the yellow and blue series.
