This paper presents an application of a transportation model to the rational distribution of animal feedstuffs in space, namely the Northern Greek regions of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace. The model is estimated with the help of the Dantzig-Wolfe analytic algorithm. The wider region is split into six production centres, i.e. as many as the administrative areas (Prefectures) involved, and six consumption centres. Under the assumption of fixed demand for the four main fodder crops (wheat, barley, maize and alfalfa) which compete for production resources against other crops in each production centre, the solution derived from the model suggests a product mix of the fodder crops which is different from that presently established resulting in a reduction of production and transportation costs of 4,8 %
