The effect of packaging and the day of circulation on the microbiological quality of pasteurized milk

A total 889 samples of pasteurized milk in plastic and Tetra Rex containers (1/2 or 1 L capacity), processed by two dairy plants of Northern Greece were examined microbiologically (Total plate count, coliform bacteria) from January 1984 to July 1987. Three hundred and three of the examined samples were processed by dairy plant A and 586 by dairy plant B. One hundred and forty five out of the 303 samples of the dairy plant A and 268 out of the 586 samples of dairy plant B were purchased from retail shops, while the rest of them were obtained from the dairy plants. According to the Greek Legislation, pasteurized milk packaged in containers up to 1l capacity should have a TPC 3x10(exp 4)/ml, while coliform bacteria should not exceed 10/ml, when sampling is made within the dairy plant. When sampling is made at the retail shops TPC should not exceed 5x10(exp 4) ml and coliform bacteria 10/ml.
