In the Amaranthus species studied by the authors (A. albus, A. blitoides, A. chlorostachys, A. retroflexus) the appearance of neotenic forms could be induced by high temperature (28) and dry conditions (20 soil moisture) in the seedling stage. By studying the seed production and germination stage. By studying the seed production and germination capacity of seeds of neotenic plants grown under the conditions mentioned above it was stated that these forms produced seeds, although very few (10-56 seeds per individual). This low number of seeds, however, makes possible the survival of these forms under adverse ecological conditions, so the appearance of neotenic forms can be regarded as a strategy of survival.
