Collecting the data of 10 091 pigs for several years and of 4 528 pigs in the years 1986/87, model calculations were made by the authors to investigate the relationships between various fattening traits and the slaughter values. Investigating partial populations only small differences could be detected between the growth capacity and the slaughter value. On the basis of the correlation coefficients, it could be stated that the higher is the live weight gain of pigs the greater is the fat content of the carcass, but this does not mean a decrease of the valuable cuts. It could be concluded that - because of the high variance - it is possible to select and breed the individuals with high growth capacity giving excellent slaughter value.
