[Communication disruption of cotton leafworm Spodoptera littoralis by spraying synthetic W.P. pheromone]

Sex pheromone may be used for the control of insect-pests by causing communication disruption for long time enough to decrease mating and, therefore, diminish larval infestation. This new procedure presents top technology in insect control. The experiment was conducted on cotton cultivations at Fayoum Governorate by using original formulations of synthetic W.P. pheromone (Z,E) 9, 11 CL 4 acetate produced by Montedison company. The effectiveness and persistence of the action of the product were estimated by calculating the number of caught male moths in traps baited with capsules of the same formulations in comparing with the number of egg-masses collected in various treatments, the disruption was assured after the first spray which lasted about 25 days and the reduction in male moth catches was 95%, 93.4% and 97.2% when using pheromone W.P.10, W.P.5 and the plastic energator treatments, respectively.
