A study on the effect of oligosaccharides on growth of intestinal bacteria

The study was attempted to search for sugar sources which selectively enhance the growth of Bifidobacterium in the intestine. Among the sugars tested, raffinose and stachyose were found to be used by Bifidobacterium longum and Bifidobacterium infantis and not by Lactobacillus acidophilus, Streptococcus faecalis nor Escherichia coli. However, lactulose was utilized by all of the bacteria tested. Raffinose, stachyose and lactulose showed almost equal growth activities to Bifidobacterium, but raffinose showed a high rate of consumption by Bifidobacterium without dependence on the preculture sugar. These results indicate that raffinose is the most suitable sugar source for bifidobacteria among the oligosaccharides tested. After the sugar sources, raffinose and lactulose, were orally administered to rats along with food, administration of raffinose caused marked growth of Bifidobacterium in the rat intestine
