The effect of NO3 : NH4 ratio on the growth of several garden fruits in hydroponics., 1; the effect of NO3 : NH4 ratio on the growth, mineral content and yield of strawberry (Fragaria grandiflora Ehrh.)

The study was carried out to investigate the effect of NO3 : NH4 ratios on the growth of strawberry, Fragaria grandiflora Ehrh. cv. Yeobong, Yeohong, Poonghyang, Ai-berry and Bokyojosaeng, and strawberrys were grown for 4 months in solution culture, half strength of Hoagland and Arnon's solution, which at constant total nitrogen concentration different ratio of NO3 : NH4 in the nutrient solution, varied 93:7, 75:25, 50:50 and 25:75. The growth in the ratio 75:25 was better than the ratios 93:7 and 50:50. Especially, fresh weight and dry weight in Yeobong supplied with 75:25 was markedly weightier than those in other varieties. However, leaf length and leaf width were not significantly different among NO3 : NH4 ratios. K and Mg content with 93:7, and Ca with 75:25 feed plants were higher, but P content was higher with 25:75 and lowest in 93:7. Not only yield was highest at 75:25 in cv. Poonghyang, but also fruit fresh weight was higher. Ratio of malformed fruits was highest at 50:50 and lowest at 93:7. All the plants were withering to death in 25:75, 45 days after treatment. Plant growth rate was higher at the late stage, 2 months after planting than early stage, 2 to 4 months after planting, and pH in the solution lowered rapidly according to the time course at 25:75
