Assessment of colostral management using a rapid refractometer test for measuring total serum protein content in normal calves

A total serum protein content was measured by a rapid refractometer test in normal calves within 1 year of age, the sera collected from March to August 1988, and for assessment of colostral management. The mean content of the serum protein among fifteen herds reading in the ranges 4.69g/100ml to 7.29g/100ml was 6.29g/100mg. Two herds (13.3 %) only showed lower protein content and predicted higher disease susceptibility. Total protein content of normal sera in calves were recognized as low as 4.40g/100ml at 1 week of age and maintained as high as 6.0g/100ml and above at 4 months of age as a constant level. Herd distribution of total serum protein content level was regarded as high as 24.2 % in range of 6.1g/100ml to 6.5g/100ml. Large size herds (5.88g/100ml) had significantly lower content of the mean serum protein than did small / medium size herds (6.35g/100ml). In a large herd, dairy calves were significantly different in serum protein content than did beef calves (P0.05). But this result will be changeable by calf caring and their colostral management
