[Evaluation of maize varieties under the 'alluvian-fan' system production in San Luis Potosi]

Twenty land races and improved varieties of corn, grown under the "aluvial fan" system of production in the state of San Luis Potosi, were evaluated to study the relation among the reinfall, soil moisture and temperature, on growth. The varieties were also characterized by morphology and yield. Rainfall, soil moisture and temperature have no significant effect on growth because of their variability. The land races A-58, A-53, A-57, A-54 and A-28 had the highest yields. High soil moisture during flowering and grian filling favored the varieties with the highest yield potential. The characteristics positively and negatively correlated with grain yield were: straw yield (alpha = 0.01), lodging percentage (alpha = 0.01), height of the planta (alpha = 0.01), lenght and diameter of the ear (alpha = 0.01), durantion of the fifth phenological phase (alpha = 0.01); percentage of infertile plantas (alpha = 0.01), days to male and female flowering (alpha = 0.05), wilting and aspect of the planta (alpha = 0.01) respectively. Grain shedding index, number of rows per ear, and duration of the first four phenological phases, were not statistically significant.
