[Response of S one progeny selection and sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) half-sib family]

The effects of selection for grain yield and seed oil content in the Lisi and Mestizo sunflower varieties through S one progeny selection in the first and half-sib family selection in the second variety were evaluated. The theoretical response to selection showed that the two selection methodologies were effective in increasing grain yield but not oil percentaje. The construction of a selection index including oil percentage, sunflower head diameter, weight of 1,000 seeds and weight per hectoliter is suggested to increase oil percentage, since the three characters are positively correlated to oil percentage. The analysis of variance of 100 half-sib families in each variety showed enough additive variance to be exploited through selection for grain yield, oil percentage and other characters in both varieties. Additive genetic variance was higher in Lisi than in Mestizo for all characters, except volumetric weight.
