Study of the one-year activity profile and dietary intake of Filipino sugarcane workers at Canlubang, Laguna [Philippines]

Thirty one sugarcane workers of the Canlubang Sugar Estate [Laguna, Philippines] were studied to determine the pattern and variation in their work activities and to establish a one-year activity profile as well as the dietary intake. Results showed that the peak months for occupational activities were from December to April while domestic activities were done uniformly throughout the year. The usual dietary pattern of the sugarcane workers consists of rice, fish and coffee for breakfast and rice, fish and occasional vegetables and/or meat dish for lunch and supper. Carbohydrates contributed 72% of the total energy intake, while proteins, fats and alcohol contributed 11%, 14% and 3%, respectively. The mean energy expenditure during the one-year random days follow-up was 10310KJ +- 310 (2464kcal +- 74) while the mean energy intake was 9186KJ +- 714 (2195 kcal +- 171). This classifies the sugarcane workers in the moderately active group.
