The so-far methods for estimation of the number of genes on the basis of doubled haploid (DH) lines require fulfilment of certain assumptions including the assumption of no nonalleic interaction and eleminating thereby a compulsory assumption of no epistasis is proposed. This method permits to estimate the number of genes more precisely and extends the possibility for calculation of gene number in practice. Theoretical studies are illustrated by an example concerning the spike length of 43 DH lines of the spring barley obtained from the F1 Emir x Himalaya hybrids
