The need to develop low-cost, less intensive systems of animal production within the EC has led to an increase in the importance of legumes, and of white clover in particular. Only Denmark produces substantial quantities of seed. Seed production is declining because of the unreliable yields that result from variable climatic conditions. This paper describes an experiment designed to study the effect of climate on seed yield in nine EC countries. Results indicate that a number of EC countries have potential for the commercial production of the seed of white clover. Seed yield and seed-yield components varied by country and by year: significant interactions were observed. Yields depended heavily on the efficiency of the harvesting method. It was concluded that there is a potential for the production of white clover seed in the Mediterranean region, where seed yields are generally higher than those of northern Europe
