Some physiological differences of the lowland and upland strains of purple nutsedge

Some physiological differences of the lowland (L-type) and the upland (0-type) strains of purple nutsedge collected from Thailand were studied in Kyoto University's Laboratory, Japan. Tubers in both types of strains could be sprouted in soil moisture condition ranging from 5-35 % at 30 degree celsius growth chamber lighted 12 hr per day. The most suitable moisture ranged from 15-25 %. Number of tuber of the L-type strains sprouted more than of the 0-type. Tubers in both strains could not sprouted at all in water-logged condition unless being aerated. Sprouted tubers in the L-type were more than in the 0-type regardless its water-logged condition. Although photosynthetic rates in both strains did not significantly differ, the transpiration rate in the 0-type strain was higher. Stomatal resistance was different in both strains even the total resistance of leaf was nonsignificiant.
