Salt tolerance of rice as related to anatomical and morpho-physiological characteristics

A comparative study of salt tolerant and susceptible rice varieties reveals distinct differences in thickness of epidermal layers and number and area of xylem vessels of root and leaf. At the young seedling stage, Pokkali and Nonabokra exhibited the least reduction of plant height upto the electrical conductivity (EC) of 13 mmhos/cm. The salt susceptible varieties as reflected by phenotypic appearance and percent seedling survivability showed the least reduction in root length due to salinity. Salt tolerance index (STI) is a good indicator of tolerance at various EC's corresponding well with reductions of dry weight of plant top. Susceptible varieties also show higher reductions of chlorophyll content with the increase of salinity.
