About 30% of the earth's irrigated land area is estimated to be affected by salinity which acts as a major ecological constraint for efficient crop production. In India alone about 12 million hectares of land area is adversely affected by salt. Most higher plants react to salt stress either through osmotic adjustment, by sequestering the inorganic ions in vacuoles or by a selective transport of potassium. In recent years, global interest has developed to understand the response of Cyanobacteria to salt stress. Since these organisms have been found to colonise such an inhospitable soils. These studies have helped partially to understand the mechanism of salt tolerance in Cyanobacteria. The property of salinity tolerance of Cyanobacteria has been shown to have potential biological utility in the reclamation of salt-affected soils.
