Polyamines and stress in crop plants

Heat and saline stress in vegetative stages of cereals and pulses causes and increases in polyamine content (PAs) and concomitantly an enhancement of arginine decarboxylase (ADC) activity. During temperature stress, in coheat coleoptile response was observed at 30 deg. C whereas 25 deg. C is the optimum in root which shows the tissue specificity. In rice, maximum PA content and ADC activity was at 42 degree C in coleoptile and 47 deg. C in root. Among the various rice genotypes, Pokkali was proved to be most tolerant showing highest germination percentage, maximum PA content and ADC activity as well as lowest DAO and PAO activity whereas M- 1-48 exhibited just reverse and was the most sensitive one. During stress, these traits changed more remarkably in sensitive cultivars than the tolerant one. Conductivity of metabolites and electrolytes in sensitive were considerably higher than those of tolerant one. Changes in ionic balance within the tissue were inversely related to PA tire. The above results suggests a correlation between variability of PA tire with some other physiological traits regarding the tolerance of rice cultivars
