The possibilities to influence piglet production by intramuscular administration of zinc to sows during gestation

The effect of the newly developed zinc-based preparation ZINDEP administered as injection at the dose of 10 mg Zn per kg of live weight to sows in various stages of gestation was evaluated, as exerted on the production and reproduction parameters of sows and piglets. Zincaemia of sows treated with zinc before mating became significantly increased on the 8th day after the administration (P0.05), as compared with the control animals; at the significance level of P0.05 vs. P0.01 it persisted till the 90th day. Live weigt of litter at birth and on the 21st day of age was significantly higher (P0.05 vs. P0.01) then in the control only in the piglets whose mothers had been treated with ZINDEP before mating and on the 30th day of gestation. Zinc administration to sows in a later period of gestation had no clear influence on the number of all piglets born and live-born piglets. The administration of the preparation influenced most effectively the postnatal development of the piglets (average weight on the 21st day, number of weaned piglets, mortality percentage till the 21st day), whose mothers had been treated before mating. The results with zinc administration in injection form to pregnant sows confirmed that its influence, evaluated on the basis of the recorded reproduction and production parameters of sows and piglets during gestation was limited by the time of treatment. The most suitable time for ZINDEP administration was considered to be the period before mating or the 30th day of gestation.
