Breeding values in egg-laying poultry were estimated by the BLUP method and selection index was constructed. Applying the BLUP method and subsequent computations, the breeding value of sires (from the progeny performance), of dams (from the progeny performance) and of their progeny (from their own performance) was determined in combination with the values of all sib individuals in the data set. Partial breeding values are then combined in selection index. The set used for model computations comprises 821 laying hens, daughters of 26 sires and 107 dams. The proposed computation procedure, which is illustrated by an example, makes it possible to evaluate each trait by a different model equation; in this way the systematic effects of environment are optimally appreciated, and also eliminated.
