Residues in biologically activated sewage sludges from meat processing plant used in the nutrition of pigs

The biologically activated dried sludges from the sewage treatment plant of the meat processing plant at Martinov was tested as a potential feed source. To determine the contents of residues, the levels of heavy metals (lead, cadmium, mercury and organic contaminants - polychlorinated biphenyls PCB) were determined. The concentration of these residues was high and in the individual cases it exceeded the permitted limit (Ministry of Agriculture and Food Standard No. 117/87). Biosludge was tested in three metabolic trials and in one growth trial as an isonitrogenic replacer of soya meal at a ratio of 1:1. The biosludge additions were 3, 6 and 9 per cent in the feed mixtures of type A1 and A2 in the fattening of pigs to 35 kg and 65 kg of live weight respectively. The biosludge feeding was stopped at the live weight of 65 kg and the fattening was finished at the weight of 120 kg. Low concentrations of the observed heavy metals were found in the edible tissues of the slaughter pigs, but PCB concentrations in the back fat and in meat fat of the test slaughter pigs increased highly significantly (P0.01 and 0.05).
