Contributions of some controllable and uncontrollable factors to the yield of sugar beet

International field trials were performed in Praha - Ruzyne (brown soils) and at Ivanovice na Hane (degraded chernozem) to study the contributions of the site, year, three forms of organic manuring of sugar beet and gradated nitrogen application rates to the yield of sugar beet roots and sugar content in 1985-1988. The investigated factors ranked as follows, as to their contributions to yield variability: 1. site (44.7 per cent), 2. organic manuring (27.2 per cent), 3. nitrogen application rates (22.0 per cent) and 4. year (6.1 per cent). The effect of studied factors on the variability of sugar yield was ranked as follows: l. nitrogen application rates (50.6 per cent), 2. year (26.3 per cent), organic manuring (22.5 per cent) and 4. site (0.6 per cent). When dung was applied, the sugar beet root yields were on an average during years higher by 4.81 per cent in comparison with the treatment when no organic manuring was applied. Straw-plouhging in was not so effective as manuring. Even a rate of 100 kg of nitrogen per ha on an average in pure nutrients appeared to be a sufficient rate to obtain the maximum sugar beet root and sugar yields. With respect to stratification of the profile, average sugar beet root yields in Praha - Ruzyne were statistically more significant on brown soils than on degraded chernozem at Ivanovice na Hane.
