Classification and production evaluation of semi-natural grasslands were performed on the basis of long-term fertilization and ecological trials. Ecological factors underlie mainly the natural production potential, whereas the principal factor of intensification is fertilisation, with emphasis on nitrogen. In practice, economic variables also play a role, e.g. the proportion of grassland out of utilized agricultural land, intensity of livestock production, accessibility for machinery, price relationships for the animal products etc. On the basis of criteria derived from both groups of factors, the intensity degree of management of pastures and meadows is defined. Their production and quality differentiation is enhanced by different levels of nutrients applied. The pastures were classified as grasslands of intensity degreees I to III (and intensive pasture farms) and the meadows were classified as grasslands of intensity degrees III to V (and intensive temporary grassland). For every intensity degree the ways of management were determined, so that a complex system of differential grassland management (SDGM) was produced.
