Effect of zero tillage was studied on gleyic phaeozems with different crop rotation systems (cereals : rootcrops : legumes ratio A - 62.5 : 37.5 : 0.0, B - 62.5 : 25 : 12.5, C - 62.5 : 12.5 :25). After 14 years of cropping reduced mineralization activity (CO2 evolution, breakdown of cellulose), changes in microbial counts (bacteria, actinomycetes, micromycetes, Azotobacter) and enrichment of soil humus with humic acids were observed. Effect of C and energy supply from crop residues was the decisive factor influencing the microbial activity under different soil treatments.
