Stimulation of the root formation of the Norway spruce (Picea abies) cuttings using of ectomycorrhizal fungi

Experiments with root formation of spring and summer cuttings of Norway spruce and ectomycorrhizal fungi stimulation were made on the basis of preliminary results. The mixture of peat and perlite (1:1) sterilized with soil fumigant Basarmide (1 g per 1 l of substrate) proved to be the most suitable substrate for rooting of cuttings. The mixture of perlite, vermiculite (or florex) and peat (4:4:1), inoculated with fine fraction of submerged mycelium of Laccaria laccata represented the most suitable mycorrhizal inoculum. As for cutting sterilization, the fungicide Fundazol 50 WP showed a relatively high effectivity and low toxicity. Application of pure cultures of ectomycorrhizal fungi resulted in significant acceleration of root formation and larger development of root system (higher number of lateral and short roots), and thus in an increased quantity of established mycorrhizae; the result was higher growth rate of the above-ground sprouts, too. Mycorrhiza formation (only initial stages being observed) was only observed during the second growing season, i.e. after transplantation into containers (placed on the outdoor beds). This was probably a question of an infection of autochthonous mycorrhizal fungi from forest nursery.
