Changes in composition of abdominal fat in fattening of chicks up to high body weight

Abdominal fat amount and composition were investigated in fattened female chicks (up to 5 - 9 weeks) and cockerels (up to 5 - 16 weeks) of the ROSS 208 hybrid combination. Dependence of examined parameters on the age of chickens was expressed by the set of regression equations. The average weight of female chickens was 2.62 kg at 9 weeks of age and that of cockerels 5.82 at 16 weeks of age. The gradual increase of the abdominal fat portion in live weight in dependence on age was more intensive in female chickens than in male chickens. Fat of cockerels contained significantly more myristic acid than the fat of female chickens. In the content of other fatty acids there were no substantial intersex differences up to 9 weeks of fattening. With prolongation of fattening the significant decrease of the stearic acid content was found in cockerels. Oleic acid portion in fat of male and female chickens increased significantly, while essential linoleic acid content was only slightly influenced. The rate of unsaturated acids to saturated ones was rather low at 46 days of age of both males and females, later it became significantly higher. In cockerels this rate had an increasing tendency in course of the whole experiment.
