Yield components and yields in spring barley under different crop rotations

The proportion of emerged plants in the number of sown germinable seeds tended to decrease with the increasing concentration of spring barley in the crop rotation. The values ascertained for average dry-matter weight per plant, number of ears and average 1000 kernel weight in the monoculture of spring barley were lower, too. The yield of grain in spring barley was affected primarily by genetic factors and the current season. With the concentration of barley in the crop rotation increasing, the yield of grain tended to decrease. In a long-term study (1973 - 1983) the yields of grain in monoculture were lower in all seasons, when compared with the highest yield obtained in crop rotations. As a rule, the crop species that received organic fertilization proved to be the most suitable forecrop for spring barley. The negative impacts of monoculture on the yield of grain were slightly attenuated by growing different barley varieties and applying the traditional cultivation of soil.
