Growth, yield, fruit quality and plant chemical contents of three tomato cultivars as responded to plant spacing and heavy nitrogen fertilizing [Egypt]

In 2 years field trials, tomato plants of cultivars E.6203, V.F.N.8 and UC. 97/3, were spaced at 10,20 or 30 cm apart, and received heavy N levels, i.e., 0,400,600 or 800 kg/fed. as NH4 SO4. The closest spacing (10 cm) increased plant hight, total and early yield, but widest spacing (30 cm) increased number of branches/ plant, number of leaves/ plant, fruit Vit C content, fruit T.S.S. and leaves carbohydrate content. Plant height, number of branches/ plant, number of leaves/ plant, total yield, fruit Vit. C, leaves total carbohydrate and total nitrogen increased as N fertilizing level increased. The highest yield was obtained when closest distance (10 cm) was combined with heighest N level (800 kg NH3 S04). Other significant interactions were found and discussed.
