Concerning the total protected area, 50 per cent is forest, 23 per cent is grassland, 11.1 per cent is an area withdrawn from agricultural cultivation, and 11 per cent is arable land. The greatest number of the larger area was declared as protected area between 1972 and 1978. At the end of 1989, 415 plant- and 619 animal species were under protection, and the number of the protected caves was 2404. The protected area was than a total of 589 128 hectares, of wich the national park was 141 151 ha, the landscape protectional district was 380 620 hectares, the area of nature protection was 28 690 hectares, and the protected area of local importance was 38 667 hectares. The state forestry organization manages 7.7 per cent of the total area.
