Rentability of the soybean- and fodder pea production [Hungary]

In 1983-87, the annual average yield of the fodder pea was 3.24 tons/hectare, that of the soybean was 1.84 tons/hectare, and the average yield proportion was 1.76:1. On the basis of the average yields over the last five years, it can be stated that a quantity of 492 kg protein of full biological value was produced on one hectare from fodder pea, and 511 kg from soybean. The production value is 28 836 Ft/hectare in the case of fodder pea, and that of the soybean is lower by 5000 Ft, a decline of 21 per cent. Although the production cost of soybean is lower by 2200 Ft/hectare, this is insufficient for the counterbalancing of the effect of the lower yield. The net income of about 6000 Ft/hectare of fodder pea and its profitability rate of 28 per cent is favourable, but the values of 3600 Ft/hectare and 18 per cent are mediocre. From an enterprisal standpoint both fodder plants /even the less favourable soybean/ are acceptable, and taking their soil nutriment-enriching grean crop /preceding the main product of a field/ property into consideration, both are favourable as compared to other field cultures. Regarding their protein-producting capacity, no significant difference exists and the production costs are also nearly identical /fodder pea: 45.8, soybean: 45.3 Ft/kg protein of biologically full value/. The efficiency of soybean production can be improved if it is grown on areas most suitable under soil- and climatic considerations.
