Soils of the Jordan Valley: II. Fertility status with special emphasis on micronutrients

To appraise the fertility status, especially the micronutrients, of the soils of the Jordan Valley, twenty soil profiles were studied. The profiles represented the foothills, Ghor, Ghor-Lisan, Katar, and Zor Soils. The nutrients investigated included phosphorus, iron, zinc, manganese, copper, and potassium. Forms of these nutrients which are available to plants as well as their total amounts were determined. With the exception of some cultivated soils where P fertilizers have been used, low amounts of available P were found. Although extractable K seemed to be adequate in most of the studied soil, K fertilization should be considered in the wake of the intensive cultivation of these soils. The soils of the Jordan Valley contained average amounts of total Fe, Zn, Mn, and Cu. However, the DTPA-extractable Fe and Zn were found to be marginal or low in most cases and the application of these essential nutrients to the soils or the crops growing on them should be practiced. Among all the micronutrients investigated, DTPA-extractable Mn was found to be high in most soils. Copper, being rarely deficient in most mineral soils, was present in adequate DTPA-extractable form
