The removal of the topsoil by erosion reduces soil fertility and the water-storage capacity of the soil resulting in a decline in crop yield. The use of narrow grass strips developed simply from unploughed strips of land, trash lines, seeding or planting is a simple soil control method that could readily be accepted by small farmers. This paper presents results of an experiment to assess the effect of grass strips in reducing soil loss and runoff on sloping land at Kabete. The objective is to use these results together with other available information, as a basis for tentative recommendations to small scale farmers in Kenya
